Athyrium nipponicum 'Pictum' | Japanese Painted Fern
In the song "Roller Derby Queen", Jim Croce describes his first encounter with the queen by saying "she caught my eye and I put it back." That pretty well sums up my first meeting with Japanese Painted Fern. I was strolling through the perennial section of a local nursery, when I fell in love.
Japanese Painted Fern (Athyrium nipponicum 'Pictum') is a small, low growing clumping variety of fern that positively lights up a shaded area. The fronds are green and burgundy towards the center and dusted with pale silver and gray and white towards the edges. Since it's a fern, you definitely want to plant it in at least partial shade or it'll crisp up.
