Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster' | Feather Reed Grass
Every landscape design professional develops a favorite plant palette over time, and the people at the very top of the profession are no exception. The landscape architecture firm of Oehme, van Sweden, and Associates is responsible for a lot of the Calamagrostis 'Karl Foesrter' you see around the DC area. It's a visually striking plant that really makes a statement.
Where so many ornamental grasses get all big and floppy as the season wears on, Calamagrostis does not. It stays almost totally vertical, creating a tight column of grass that eventually ends in pink-tinged plumes as the season wears on. Calamagrostis also tolerates clay soils and some moisture, so it's a terrific choice for Virginia.
