Bloodgood Maple | Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood'

"Bloodgood" isn't just what Tarzan says when he becomes a vampire. It's also a beautiful small tree that grows to approximately 15 feet wide and 15-20 feet tall, with deep burgundy foliage. Be sure to read that twice - it's a small tree, but it still wants to get to at least 15 ft x 15 ft. I can't even begin to tell you how many homes I've been to in northern Virginia where someone planted a Bloodgood maple (Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood') way too close to the house or sidewalk, and now it's eating the house (or visitors). "But Japanese maples stay small!" wail the homeowners, as we discuss the painful options. Don't make that mistake!

Planted in the right spot, though, Bloodgood maples are an exceptional tree. The deep burgundy foliage jumps out against brick or light colored siding. The vase shape is graceful, and this tree is a rock star with good landscape lighting. You can even cheat it a little and plant in tighter areas than you'd think, IF you have a good, long term pruning plan in place. We tucked one into a corner at a downtown Fredericksburg home, and with annual pruning and shaping it's doing great 10 years later.
